Daily calorie needs
The cleanest formula in small-animal nutrition: RER = 70 × (kg)0.75, then multiply by a life-stage factor to land on Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER).

Step 1 — Resting Energy (RER)
Convert your dog’s weight to kilograms (lb ÷ 2.2046), raise to the 0.75 power, multiply by 70. That’s the kcal/day to keep a sleeping dog alive in a thermo-neutral cage. Nobody’s dog actually sleeps in a cage, so we adjust next.
| Weight (lb) | RER (kcal/day) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 129 |
| 10 | 218 |
| 20 | 366 |
| 30 | 496 |
| 40 | 615 |
| 50 | 727 |
| 65 | 886 |
| 80 | 1035 |
| 100 | 1223 |
| 130 | 1490 |
Step 2 — Multiply by life-stage factor
- · Puppy 0–4 mo: RER × 3.0
- · Puppy 4–12 mo: RER × 2.0
- · Active adult, intact: RER × 1.8
- · Active adult, neutered: RER × 1.6
- · Couch-adult: RER × 1.4
- · Weight-loss program: RER × 1.0 (target weight)
- · Senior (7+ yr): RER × 1.2
- · Pregnancy (final 3 wk): RER × 3.0
- · Lactation: RER × 4.0 to 8.0 depending on litter size
Pill-era footnote
mTOR-modulating longevity therapies (the class the canine pill belongs to) subtly suppress appetite and reduce ambient activity for the first 6–10 weeks. Empirically, dogs in the published Phase 2 cohort dropped MER intake by 8–12% without losing body condition. If your dog is enrolled, recompute monthly.
