How to verify a product yourself

  1. 1Search the product and active ingredient in the VMD Product Information Database.
  2. 2Check whether the record is currently authorised or expired.
  3. 3Open the Summary of Product Characteristics and package information.
  4. 4Confirm territory and marketing status with the authorisation holder when necessary.

What UK owners should verify

The relevant question is not whether LOY-002 has appeared in international news. It is whether a specific veterinary medicinal product holds a current UK marketing authorisation for the intended use and territory.

The VMD Product Information Database is designed to answer that product-level question. It distinguishes currently authorised and expired products and supplies approved product information.

Authorised does not always mean marketed

The VMD warns that an authorised product may not necessarily be marketed. A database record can establish authorization, but owners may still need the authorisation holder or a veterinarian to confirm commercial supply.

This distinction prevents two opposite errors: claiming a product is available because it is authorised, or claiming it is unapproved merely because a clinic cannot currently order it.

Why the approved SPC matters

The Summary of Product Characteristics defines the approved species, indications, contraindications, dose, administration, adverse reactions, warnings, and other professional information. It should outrank preliminary descriptions and foreign labels.

VMD notes that approved database changes can appear before updated information reaches marketed packaging. When information conflicts, owners should ask the veterinarian or authorisation holder for clarification.

Questions for a UK veterinary practice

Ask the practice to identify the exact UK-authorised product and current SPC. Confirm whether the product is actually being marketed, who supplies it, what monitoring is required, and how suspected adverse events are reported.

Do not treat a U.S. trial listing, overseas pharmacy page, supplement advertisement, or social post as proof of UK authorization.

  • What is the UK marketing authorisation number?
  • Is the product authorised for this exact use and territory?
  • Is it currently marketed?
  • Which SPC and label apply?

Track a verified change

We update this page when an official register, regulator, sponsor, or study operator publishes a material country-specific change. A headline alone does not change the status.
